ASB Hackathon: Catalyzing Connections, Crafting a Legacy! - Participant Handbook

Welcome, Innovators! ✨

Today, you have the incredible opportunity to tackle real-world challenges faced by ASB. Your solutions will have a direct impact, shaping how ASB engages its esteemed alumni and supports the vibrant Malaysian social enterprise ecosystem. This is your chance to showcase your talent, collaborate with brilliant minds, and potentially get your work in front of some influential figures. Let’s build something amazing!

The Challenge: Making a Real Impact 🚀

Get ready to dive into one of two high-impact challenges designed to solve genuine ASB needs:

  1. Elevating Alumni Engagement: Help ASB revolutionize how it connects with its global alumni network. (Full Problem Statement & Data: Coming Soon!)
  2. Mapping the Social Enterprise Landscape: Assist ASBhive in building a dynamic resource for Malaysia’s impactful social enterprises. (Full Problem Statement & Data: Coming Soon!)

Prepare to choose your challenge! Detailed problem statements, specific data points, and target outcomes will be released at the hackathon kickoff.

Tech & Tools to Consider 🛠️

While specific requirements will be in the full problem statements, here are some technologies and approaches you might find useful:

  • Data Sourcing & Scraping (Potential):
    • Public web data (e.g., LinkedIn for alumni, various sites for enterprises).
    • Tools: Python (BeautifulSoup, Scrapy, Selenium), Node.js (Puppeteer, Cheerio).
  • Data Handling & Storage:
    • Formats: CSV, JSON.
    • Storage: Simple databases (SQLite), or even structured files.
  • AI & LLMs (Highly Encouraged!):
    • GenAI (Gemini API): Access will be provided for parsing, summarizing, or structuring data. This is a fantastic chance to leverage cutting-edge AI! (API Key Access Details: Coming Soon!)
  • Building Interfaces (Especially for the ASBhive Challenge):
    • Lightweight web frameworks (e.g., Streamlit, Gradio, Flask/Express basics).
    • Low/No Code tools (e.g., Notion, Softr, Retool) could be great for rapid prototyping.

Think about how these tools can help you build a functional prototype within the time limit!

Hackathon Essentials 룰

  • Time: A focused 8-hour development window. Plan for rapid iteration!
  • Focus: The core goal is a functional prototype that addresses the problem.
    • For the Alumni challenge, data extraction accuracy is key.
    • For ASBhive, a usable interface to display and interact with data is important.
    • Detailed deliverable expectations will be in the full problem statements.
  • Ethics First:
    • Respect data privacy and platform ToS.
    • Responsible data handling.
  • Teamwork Makes the Dream Work: Collaborate, share ideas, and leverage diverse skills.
  • Code of Conduct: We’re committed to a respectful, inclusive, and collaborative environment for all.

Judging & What We’re Looking For 🏆

While the precise scoring rubric will be shared with the problem statements, we’ll be looking for:

  • Problem Solving: How effectively does your solution address the chosen ASB challenge?
  • Technical Execution: Is your prototype functional and well-implemented?
  • Innovation & Creativity: Have you used GenAI or other tools in interesting ways?
  • Impact Potential: How valuable could your solution be to ASB?
  • Clarity of Demo: Can you clearly showcase what you’ve built and its value?

(Specific Judging Criteria & Point Breakdown: Coming Soon with Problem Statements!)

Submission Sneak Peek:

You’ll likely need to submit:

  1. A GitHub repository with your code.
  2. A README.md explaining your project.
  3. A short demo (live or recorded).

(Full Submission Guidelines & Deadlines: To Be Announced!)

Connect with ASB 🤝

Key ASB team members will be on-site and available to clarify questions about the challenges and ASB’s needs (they won’t be giving away the technical answers – that’s your brilliance to shine!).
